Janesville man charged in shoplifting scheme heads to trial
Suspect also charged with delivering drugs
JANESVILLE, Wis. — Tyler Groeller, 30, is heading to trial following accusations he was the mastermind behind a shoplifting scheme.
Groeller appeared in Rock County Circuit Court Tuesday morning for a preliminary hearing. He stood mute, as a judge bound him over for trial. A date has not been set yet.
Groeller is accused of trying to steal $20,000 in merchandise from Home Depot stores across Wisconsin. Police say he would recruit heroin users to steal from the store, then return the item for a gift card.
Groeller had told investigators a Janesville landlord would buy the gift cards for 50 cents on the dollar. Police have turned the case over to the Rock County District Attorney’s Office, which will decide if charges will be filed against the landlord.
