Jan W. Jackson

Jan W. Jackson

Madison-Jan W. Jackson, age 71, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, February 19, 2014.

Jan was born May 15, 1942 to Harold and Irene Jackson in Waukesha WI. He grew up in Spring Green, and graduated from Spring Green High School. After earning an Associate Degree from MATC, he worked for the City of Madison Department of Traffic Engineering and retired after 39 years.

Jan devoted much of his life to the Boy Scouts of America, both before, and especially after his retirement. He inspired and guided many young Scouts along their journey to become Eagle Scouts, including all three of his sons. Jan served the Four Lakes Council, and after the merger, Glacier’s Edge Council for many years as the Woodman Center for Camping and Education Ranger, caring for the property and delivering programs to the units and families that camped there. We will remember our loving husband and father for the many gifts he gave us, among which we find remarkable are: his love for the outdoors, including hunting with his sons, his generosity, special outings with his sons and grandsons, his ability to build and repair just about anything (thanks to Grandpa Oleson), cooking, and many other special memories that will remain in our hearts. Jan enjoyed conversation. He appreciated relationships and kept family connected. He practiced what he learned growing up: Work hard, be there for others, accept life’s challenges and celebrate its events.

Jan is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rita; sons Dan (Debbie), Robert (Michelle), Matt (Amanda); grandsons Nate, Brayden, Xander, Zeke Jackson; brother Craig (Ann) and their children; mother-in-law Rita; sister-in-law Linda (Mike); brothers-in-law Timm (Jane), Dan (Jennifer), and their children. Jan was preceded in death by his daughter Lisa; his parents; and his father-in-law Merton.

Jan’s family wishes to thank the 5th Floor Medical Intensive Care Unit and the Renal Center of St. Mary’s Hospital for the care and compassion they gave him.

We will celebrate his life with a Mass of Christian Burial which will be held at ST. PETER’S CATHOLIC CHURCH on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Avenue on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. and also on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
