James E. “Jim” Welch
Madison – James E. “Jim” Welch, age 81, peacefully joined our Lord on Wednesday, January 29, 2014.
He was born on September 26, 1932 in Madison, the son of Ernest and Dorothy (Laeser) Welch. After graduating from high school he joined the U.S. Army, serving in England during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning home he married Evelyn Therese “Terry” Cunningham, enjoyed 25 years of marriage and were blessed with four children. Jim was proud to be a part of his families plumbing business, Welch Plumbing. He worked as a plumber all his life and was a member of the Plumbers Union, Local #75.
Jim enjoyed golf and was a member of Blackhawk Country Club. Jim was an avid Wisconsin sports fan. After retirement Jim loved working for 20 years as an usher for Badger sporting events at Camp Randall and the Kohl Center. Later in life, Jim met a wonderful woman, Betty Gesme. Together they traveled all over the U.S. and had many memorable vacations, 96 to be exact.
He is survived by his four children: Michael Welch, David (Sue) Welch, Douglas (Julie) Welch and Jamie (Blair) Schmitz; seven grandchildren, Ashley (Andrew) Longworth, Lindsay, Kelsey, and Henry Welch, Walter Schmitz, Brynn (Karey) Howard and Casey Radtke; three great-grandchildren, Savannah, Liam and Emma; and brothers, Bo (Maryann) Welch and Jerry Welch.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Terry Welch, his longtime companion, Betty Gesme, and brother, Richard Welch.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 3, 2014 at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Atwood Ave., with Fr. Michael Radowicz officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass on Monday at the church.
