James David Newlun
MCFARLAND- James David Newlun, age 70, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, after a courageous battle with kidney cancer. He was born on Aug. 28, 1942, in Mauston to James and Ruth (Lawton) Newlun. Jim graduated from Mauston High School and then served four years with the U.S. Air Force. He then attended and graduated from UW- Stevens Point with degrees in economics and business. Upon graduation he went to work for the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions where he retired after 34 years. Jim enjoyed playing softball. He played for the U.S. Air Force and continued playing well into his 60’s. While in the U.S. Air Force he joined the Boy Scouts as an assistant scoutmaster for the boys on the base. He has remained an active member of the Boy Scouts ever since. Over the years, he has served as scoutmaster, assistant scoutmaster, pow wow chairman, unit commissioner, roundtable commissioner, Baraboo Circus Heritage Chairman and on different training teams for Gateway Council, Bay Lakes Council and currently Glaciers Edge Council. He enjoyed being outdoors and was always working around his yard and garden.
Jim is survived by his wife, Sharon; his son, David and wife, Kristin Newlun and their two sons, Arthur and Jackson; his daughter, Sara and husband, Chris Palumbo and their two children, Ava and Julian; brothers, Richard (Luanne) of Spencer, Dennis of LaValle, Tom (Ginger) of Wonewoc; sisters, Bonnie (Dave) Pelto of Skandia, Mich., Jane (Phil) Hebrink of Preston, Minn., and Janet Fisher of Reedsburg; sister-in-law, Evelyn (Gerry) Radtke of LaValle, brother-in-law, Robert (Atti) Weitzel of Amsterdam, Netherlands; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as many other loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Carol Newlun; and brother, Ronald Newlun.
Memorial services will be held at BASHFORD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 329 North St., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, with the Rev. Fran Deaner presiding. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens with military honors being conducted. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday Dec. 2, 2012, and also at the church from 10 a.m. until time of service on Monday.
The family cannot express the gratitude to everyone during this difficult time, specifically Andy Milkowski, a very dear friend of Jim’s who was always there for him; Dr. Hegeman, along with the doctors and staff at the Carbone Cancer Center at 1 South Park whose care and compassion made his last years comforting. We have been so blessed by the countless and generous acts of kindness and the many thoughts and prayers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established.
