Jacob C. Schmelzer
Jacob C. “Jake” Schmelzer, age 80, of Highland passed away at his home on Friday July11, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was born on November 17, 1933, the youngest son of Roy and Baptista (Dolan) Schmelzer. Jake graduated from Highland High School in 1951 and was united in marriage to Rosemary Scullion on July 14, 1953, just prior to being drafted into the U.S. Army. During the year Jake was stationed in Korea, his first son was born. After his return from Korea, Jake and Rosemary farmed in the Highland area until retirement in 1993. Jake and Rosemary moved into Highland and Jake worked for TriStar Pallets and Weaver Auto Parts. He was a member of Ss. Anthony & Philip Catholic Church, the American Legion and VFW.
Jake and Rosemary are the parents of 12 children: Jacob Jr who died in 1973; Lil (John) Larson of Madison; Joe (Sandy), Jess (Ev), and Jude (Kathy), all of Highland; Margaret (John) Schmelzer of Oregon; Jim (Pam) and John of Brodhead; Kate (Mark) Dobson of Montfort; Laurie (Al) Heimsoth of Mineral Point; Joel of Evansville and Justin (Heather) of Waunakee. They have 22 grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and nine great-children.
Jake is also survived by a brother, Monsignor Delbert Schmelzer; three sisters, LaVon Vorndran; Suzette Yager and Patsy Pustina and brothers-in-law and sisters-in law, Darlene Schmelzer; Patsy Prochaska; Diane Semonson; Marty Scullion; Georgia Riley; Trudy Benish and Emmett Scullion, as well as nieces, nephews and friends. Among those friends is a special group who has played cards, traveled, gambled, celebrated and laughed and cried together for over 50 years.
In addition to his parents, Jake was preceded in death by his son Jacob, Jr; grand daughters Jessi and Kelby Schmelzer; son-in-law Mike Wienkes; his mother and father in law, Emmett and Toots Scullion; brothers Bob and Laverne Schmelzer; a sister-in-law, Marie Schmelzer and brothers in law Norbert Pustina; Louis Yager; Donald Scullion; Jack Prochaska; David Scullion and Jim Riley.
Jake will be buried on his 61st wedding anniversary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday July 14, 2014 at Ss. Anthony & Philip Catholic Church, with his brother Monsignor Delbert Schmelzer officiating. A visitation will be held at the church from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Sunday July 13, 2014 and after 10:00 A.M. on Monday.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the teams at the St Mary’s Hospital; Dodgeville Dialysis unit; Upland Hills Hospice and the Highland Ambulance Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to Highland Ambulance or Upland Hills Hospice.
