Ivan B Fagre
MIDDLETON, WI – Rev. Ivan Bernard Fagre, age 90, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Agrace HospiceCare.
He is remembered for his lifetime of service as a teacher, missionary and pastor and as a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Ivan served parishes on three continents and was fluent in Norwegian, German and Japanese. He cherished his Norwegian heritage and visited Norway many times. Ivan was born in Finlayson, Minnesota, the youngest child of Christian and Emma Easton Fagre, and graduated from Park Rapids High School. Along with his three brothers, he served in World War II. Shortly after D-Day, he landed in Marseilles with the 103rd Infantry Division and was later wounded in action in Germany. He received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Purple Heart and Silver Star. After recovering from his wounds, Ivan enrolled in St. Olaf College (Class of 1948) and later earned advanced degrees from Luther Theological Seminary and Princeton Theological Seminary.
On June 3, 1952, he married his beloved Polly (Albertson) in Minneapolis.
Ivan worked for the Lutheran World Federation refugee services in Germany from 1949 to 1951, serving the last year as American Zone Director. After his ordination, he became a missionary in Tokyo, Japan with the Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served for nine years. Returning to the US in 1968, he served as the training director for Lutheran missionaries and worked in the areas of international mission and development in St. Paul and New York.
He could not resist an opportunity to return to Germany, a country he had come to love, and in 1977 accepted a call as pastor with the Bavarian Lutheran Church in Berchtesgaden, Germany which he served for four years.
At the end of his career, he went back to St. Olaf College as a faculty member in the religion department. Polly and Ivan spent their retirement years in Northfield, MN and recently moved to Middleton to be closer to family.
In addition to his wife, Ivan is survived by his five children Daniel (Ann) Fagre of West Glacier, MT; Nathan (Connie) Fagre of Middleton; Anitra (Tom) Waldo of Juneau, AK; Leslie (Eric) Poppele of Santa Fe, NM; and Ingrid (Kent) Fagre-Miller of Florence, MT. He is also survived by his 11 grandchildren, Casey (Matt) Kohn; Danielle Fagre; Lars Waldo; Nick (Hannah) Waldo; Mats, Christian, Alex and Ben Fagre; Jasper and Eli Poppele; and Justin Miller, as well as his nieces and nephews. Ivan was preceded in death by his parents and by his brothers and sisters Ed, Irene (Mielke), El (Corchran), Pearl (Nicklawske), Oswald and Len.
The family would like to thank his caregivers at UW Hospital and Clinics, Agrace HospiceCare and Heritage Senior Living-Middleton for their care and support of Ivan in the past year.
A family service was held at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Middleton. A memorial service will be held at a future date in Northfield, Minnesota.
