Irene M. Taylor
Madison – Irene M. (Gorry) Taylor, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Agrace HospiceCare.
She was born on July 25, 1920 in Madison, the daughter of George R. and Josephine A. (Moore) Gorry. Irene was a graduate of Edgewood High School in 1938. She attended the former Madison Vocational School and classes at UW Extension. On August 25, 1940, she married B. Arden Taylor. They were married for 56 years. The couple were long time Monona residents. She worked as a bookkeeper for the city of Monona. She was an outstanding figure skater and ice dancer. She taught many Madison children and adults to skate. She was co-founder of the Madison Skating Club at Truax arena (the first indoor ice skating rink in Madison). Irene was the President of the Women Municipal Golf and later of the Women’s Municipal Bowling League, a member of the Tap Dance Kids, and Pedal Pushers Organ Club. Irene formed the Monona Ragtime Band. She was known for her unique musical spoon playing and played with many bands.
Irene is survived by her sister, Betty Jo (Jerry) Motelet; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband B. Arden Taylor in 1996; and her sister, Edna May Doyle in 2012.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2012, at 11 a.m. at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 401 S. Owen Drive, Madison, with Msgr. Kenneth Fiedler officiating. A visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
