In the 608: Local teacher goes viral on TikTok
FORT ATKINSON, Wis. – There’s a local teacher going viral for his use of social media in the classroom.
The first TikTok by Mr. Chick Westby has already seen more than 2.2 million views. Westby is a science teacher at Fort Atkinson School District.
He’s using TikTok to show more of what his students are learning in the classroom. TikTok is one of the fastest-growing social media platforms that enables users to film and share short videos from 15 seconds to one minute long.
“They’re used to getting stuff fast and often, and if your class doesn’t move along like that as well, you lose kids considerably,” Mr. Westby said. “They have to find some value in what you’re presenting them, in wanting them to learn or they check out really quick.”
In his 37 years of education, this is certainly a new experience for Mr. Westby, but he says it’s a great way to grab students’ attention.
“We really want those kids to be excited about hey what’s going to happen tomorrow,” Mr. Westby added. “We want that excitement every day, so when they come through that door, they’re wondering what’s going on here today and to be excited about that, and I play it up big.”
Mr. Westby is also the head coach for the cross country team, so he’s certainly staying busy.
Some of Mr. Westby’s colleagues tell News 3 Now that he’s one of the most positive, happy and energetic teachers and coaches they know.
