In the 608: Colonial Club celebrating 50 years in Sun Prairie

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. – As far as nonprofits go, 50 years is quite an achievement.

After long delays due to public health restrictions, staff and volunteers at the Colonial Club Senior Activity Center in Sun Prairie are finally celebrating the agency’s 50th anniversary.

Volunteers and staff poured through boxes of old photos, newsletters, annual reports and other items to be put on display.

Executive director Bob Power says there’s a lot to proud about in their community. With all the growing pains and financial challenges over the years, and a pandemic on top of it, they’re happy to still be there for north-eastern Dane County.

“Being one of the few non-profits senior centers in the state of Wisconsin is what I think brings us the most unique flavor to the table,” Power said. “We’re not just a senior center that serves a meal and people come in and play bingo and that’s the extent of it. We have a comprehensive menu of social services to offer older adults.”

Over the weekend, they held a grand re-opening, ribbon-cutting ceremony on the Colonial Club grounds, that Governor Evers, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi and Sun Prairie Mayor Paul Esser were part of.

The non-profit ended up raising over $50,000 for their 50th anniversary.

It all goes back to the early volunteers and the generosity of Garvin and Helen Cremer of the Wisconsin Cheeseman. It took 3 years of hard work back in 1969 to 1971 to get it all built and opened up for the community.

Reflecting on the last 50 years, Mayor Esser tells News 3 Now it wouldn’t have been such a success without the community-wide collaboration and cooperation.

“They speculated in 1971 where this was all going to go, and here we are 50 years later,” Mayor Esser said. “We have a program that touches thousands of people every year, and it’s more than just the City of Sun Prairie.”

While many things have changed over the decades, their mission remains the same in helping enhance the well-being and independence of older adults.
