Illinois man dies in crash on icy Highway 14, officials say
WALWORTH, Wis. — An Illinois man died in a crash Thursday morning after his vehicle lost control on an icy road in Walworth County and hit another vehicle, officials said.
Walworth County sheriff’s deputies were sent around 6:45 a.m. to respond to reports of a two-car crash on Highway 14 just south of the village of Walworth, according to a release.
A white 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche, driven by 59-year-old Steven Johnson, of Fotana, was going south on Highway 14 when a black 2001 Hyundai, driven by 39-year-old Luis Gutierrez-Fernandez, of Harvard, Illinois, going north, lost control on the icy road and crossed into the path of the Chevrolet, investigators said.
Johnson was taken to a hospital with injuries. Gutierrez-Fernandez was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.
The crash remains under investigation.
