Illegal drug manufacturing may have caused apartment building fire, police say

Fire near Sauk City causes $250,000 damage

A fire that damaged a Platteville apartment building early Monday morning may have been caused by illegal drug manufacturing, police said.

Platteville police responded to reports of a structure fire on West Main Street in the downtown area around 4 a.m., according to a release.

Platteville firefighters, along with crews from Lancaster and Cuba City, put out the fire, officials said.

Everyone inside the building got out safely, according to the release.

Main and Fourth streets were still closed as of 9 a.m. Monday as crews continue to assess the damage and address safety concerns, officials said.

While on scene, fire crews discovered suspicious materials in one of the damaged apartments, according to the release. Investigators believe the fire may have started due to illegal drug manufacturing.

The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation is helping the Platteville Police Department investigate the incident.
