WIAA moves girls state wrestling to Kohl Center, adopts super-regional format in boys D2, D3 wrestling
MADISON, Wis. (WKBT) — The WIAA’s latest board meeting is resulting in some changes to winter sports, with most of the approved proposals affecting wrestling.
Girls’ wrestling will now have a 16-competitor bracket to qualify for state, which held its first-ever tournament last winter in La Crosse. The board says the tournament will now move to the Kohl Center in conjunction with the boys individual state tournament.
Boys wrestling will also now have a super-regional format in Division 2 and Division 3, essentially combining two regionals into one. Now, the top four individuals advance to sectionals, and the top two teams go on to team sectionals.
State gymnastics will also return to the modified Capital Cup format in 2023, meaning team competition in both Divisions 1 and 2 will be on Friday, and individual competition in both divisions will be Saturday.
