Weather-related crashes, including fatal near West Salem, swamp law enforcement

UNDATED (WKBT) — As Coulee Region law enforcement agencies investigated several weather-related crashes Tuesday afternoon, two in particular were more severe.

A fatal car-semi crash occurred on Interstate 90 near West Salem and a two-vehicle crash in Vernon County sent one person to a hospital.

Shortly after 1 p.m., a two-vehicle crash at U.S. Hwy. 14 and Paulson Lane in Coon Township trapped an occupant of one of the vehicles, according to the Coon Valley Fire Department, one of several agencies that responded.

Coon Valley firefighters extricated the person, who was taken to a hospital, according to a news release. No condition report was available.

Responding to the accident besides Coon Valley firefighters were Gundersen Tri-State Ambulance, the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department and the Westby Police Department.

The scene was cleared by 2:45 p.m.

Meanwhile, at about 2 p.m., a crash in which a vehicle went under a semi-trailer occurred at Mile Marker 10 on Interstate 90 near West Salem.

Eastbound lanes of the interstate were blocked until nearly 5 p.m., according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.
State Patrol troopers were swamped with accidents “all the way to the Illinois state line,” said a patrol representative in Tomah.
