Fort McCoy to discontinue Afghan refugee number updates
FORT MCCOY (WKBT) — Fort McCoy will no longer be announcing the specific numbers of Afghan refugees at Fort McCoy.
Staff from the Monroe County military installation cite Department of Homeland Security police. DHS is now the lead federal agency for Operation Allies Welcome.
As of the most recent available numbers, there are more than 8,000 Afghan refugees at Fort McCoy.
DHS did release a new fact sheet this week on the operation, which gives insight into the screening and vetting process.
About 300 government employees are processing the refugees using biometric and biographic screenings.
All of those arriving are being tested for COVID-19 upon arrival at the airport. They are also being offered COVID-19 vaccines and other vaccinations.
