Burnes outlasts Snell as Taylor, Brewers beat Padres 4-1

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Corbin Burnes outlasted Blake Snell in a showdown of recent Cy Young Award winners and Tyrone Taylor hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Diego Padres 4-1. Mike Brosseau also homered for the Brewers, who ended the Padres’ winning streak at five.

Burnes is the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner. He held the Padres to one run and five hits in six innings, struck out five and walked two. The only run off the right-hander came on a double-play ball in the first and he allowed just one baserunner into scoring position the rest of the way.

His counterpart, 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell, did not fare so well, allowing three runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Snell’s struggles began in the fifth inning when Mike Brosseau sent a towering drive over the left-field fence to tie the game.

Snell was pulled with one out in the sixth inning. His reliever, Craig Stammen, left a pitch over the middle of the strike zone, which Tyrone Taylor was more than happy to send 398 feet to left. Taylor now has four home runs this season, with three of those coming within the last four games. His three-run home run would prove to be the difference.

Devin Williams took the mound for Milwaukee in the ninth inning, striking out two and earning his third save of the season. Burnes was credited with the win, moving his record to 2-2.

The Brewers (27-16) now lead the NL Central by three games and have the fourth-best record in the National League. Milwaukee wraps up their three-game series against San Diego on Wednesday at 3:10 p.m. CT.

Aaron Ashby, who celebrated his 24th birthday on Tuesday, will start for the Brewers against Yu Darvish (4-1, 3.91 ERA). Darvish has faced Milwaukee seven times in his career and is 2-2, allowing 10 runs on 26 hits over 38 innings pitched.
