Body recovered from La Crosse River near Sparta

SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) – First responders recovered a body from the La Crosse River in Monroe County Friday afternoon.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from a canoer about a body in the river near Hammer Road in the town of Sparta around 12:30 p.m.

“They believed there was a deceased individual in the river,” Capt. Ryan Lee said.

Officers arrived at the scene, along with the medical examiner, Sparta Fire Department and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

“The body was located in the La Crosse River near the Hammer Road overpass,” Lee said.

First responders stayed at the scene until 2:30 p.m.

“We coordinated efforts to remove that body,” he said.

Investigators have identified the body but are not yet releasing the person’s name.

“We’re just withholding information until the notification until the next of kin,” Lee said.

The person’s cause of death is still unknown.

Officers say the next steps in the investigation will be interviewing friends and family once the next of kin is identified.
