Howard W. Pape

On Monday, September 2, 2019, Howard W. Pape, loving husband and father of two children, passed away at the age of 74.

Howie was born in Baraboo, Wisconsin on June 23, 1945 to Louis and Melania (Pulvermacher) Pape. He graduated from Sauk City High School in 1963. On February 8, 1969, he married the love of his life, Sally Grasse, daughter of Harvey and Grace Grasse of Door County, Wisconsin. They lovingly raised two children, Phillip and Maria.

Howie was a talented and passionate lifelong musician. He played guitar and sang in several popular bands, including Trinity, Crossroads, and Sons of Sauk Prairie. His favorite musician was Roy Obinson, a singer to whom he was often compared. In addition to music, Howie was passionate about classic cars, animals, particularly his daughter’s therapy dog, Lulu, and known for his lively retelling of stories and sense of humor. Like any good Wisconsin son, he loved the Brewers, the Packers, and Badgers and particularly enjoyed traveling to Door County to visit extended family.

His music was much admired not only by friends and family, but also by the fans who frequented the bars and weddings where his bands played. Howie was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile, and as one of the kindest and most generous men you might meet. Sally, his wife of 50 years, remembers him as being a “hunk of burning love.”

Howie is survived by his wife, Sally; his children, Phil (Karyn) and their daughter, Katie, and Maria (Derek) Thompson; as well as his siblings Ruth, Jeanne, Harry and Richard.

Howie was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Melania and his siblings Verna, Milly and Art.

As per Howie’s wishes, a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Howie’s family would like to express their gratitude to the Agrace Hospice Staff, Sauk Prairie Hospital, Prairie Clinic and Dr. John McAuliffe, the Sauk Prairie Ambulance and EMT Crew and to all the friends and family who have offered love and support.
