Madison-area author Danielle St. Louis began hiking her home state’s trails after she adopted Lucky, an anxious border collie/Labrador retriever mix who needed a lot of exercise but was stressed and reactive around other dogs or people on neighborhood walks.

When St. Louis went looking for a book that offered dog-friendly information on trails, she couldn’t find one with the level of dog-specific detail she wanted — so she wrote one.

“A Dog Lover’s Guide to Hiking Wisconsin’s State Parks” was published in May by the University of Wisconsin Press. It features recommended hikes in 47 Wisconsin state parks, plus helpful information including dog-related rules, details on amenities like bathrooms and dog-friendly swimming or picnic areas, and a list of nearby veterinarians.

St. Louis also runs the Instagram account @wistateparkdogs where, if you’re lucky, you can get a glimpse of Lucky the Adventure Dog.
