Helen Violet Mellor, 101, of Platteville died on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Gray’s Nursing Home, Platteville.
uneral services will be 12:00 p.m. (Noon) Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Pastor Mary Ann Floerke will officiate. Burial will be at Lima Union Cemetery. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Helen was born in Grant County, Wisconsin on April 24, 1911 the daughter of Bert and Rose (Pickett) Medley. She was united in marriage to Donald L. Mellor on May 11, 1935 in Galena, Illinois. He preceded her in death on July 19, 1994. They farmed until 1958 on the family farm at Union. Helen taught at the Hake School before she was married and returned to teaching in January 1957. She also returned to the University of Wisconsin, Platteville, where she earned her teaching degree in 1964. She taught at the rural schools of Lone, Wunderlin and Arthur until they were consolidated in to the Platteville School District. She then taught at the Hanmer Robbins, Westview and Platteville Middle School until she retired in 1977. Helen and Don loved traveling, touring all 48 states only missing Hawaii and Alaska. They also liked to boat, fish and dine out. Helen also was a great collector, with numerous collections over her lifetime. She belonged to the ADK Sorority, Retired teachers, Lima Union Ladies Aid and Rebekah’s.
Survivors include daughters, Roselyn Cullen of Platteville; Marilyn Kay (Michael) Lauritzen of Waupaca, WI; daughter-in-law, Janice Mellor of Livingston, WI; nine grandchildren, Patricia (Alan) Rowley, Apple Valley, CA; Michael (Amy) Mellor of Dodgeville, WI; Elizabeth Davis of Oconomowoc, WI; Craig (Barb) Mellor of Livingston; Phillip (Amy) Cullen of Chester, SC; Todd (Kathy Davis) Lauritzen of Appleton, WI; Jeff (Nicole) Lauritzen of Waupaca; Ann Lauritzen of Sun Prairie, WI; and Luke Lauritzen of Janesville, WI; 28 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Merlin Mellor and William Campbell; sister-in-law, Ilah Harvey and nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death also by her parents, son, Donald “DJ” Mellor, granddaughters, Joy Cullen and Jill (Cullen) Hoffman, great-great-grandson, Connor Smith, son-in-law, John Cullen, nephew, Roger Mellor, brothers, Herbert and Raymond Medley, sister, Lois Campbell, brothers-in-law, William Harvey, Lyle Mellor, sisters-in-law, Margaret Mellor, Darlene Mellor, Mary Medley and Nancy Medley.
