Health officials: Flu virus is especially dangerous for children, seniors this year
MADISON, Wis. — The Department of Health Services said this year’s flu virus is especially dangerous for young children and people older than 65.
Since Jan. 1, the state has seen about 125 outbreaks in long-term care facilities and assisted living centers. That’s more than the state has ever seen in one month.
The state health department said seniors are not able to bounce back from the symptoms. Nurses at St. Mary’s Care Center say if you are sick, don’t go visit a family member living there, because you’re putting them at risk.
“We ask all of our visitors that if you are sick, please consider postponing your visit until you’re well. If you absolutely must see somebody and you still have some leftover symptoms, we provide masks at the entrance to our building,” infection preventionist Miranda McElligott said.
SSM Health and lots of other care facilities are offering flu shots to visitors and requiring all of its staffers to be vaccinated.
