Harvey Breuscher

Harvey Breuscher, age 89 of Madison, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 18, 2014.

Harvey was born on December 21, 1924 in Des Plaines, IL to Christ and Ida Breuscher. After graduating from Maine Township High School in 1943, Harvey enlisted in the United States Naval Air Corps. He spent the next three years as an aerial gunner and radioman on a Douglas SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber in the South Pacific during WWII. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946 and graduated from Drake University in 1950. He married Charleene Johnson on October 17, 1950 in Des Moines, IA. Harvey had a long and distinguished career as a reporter and public relations executive starting with the Suburban Times of Des Plaines, IL in 1950. He became Associated Press Editor, Chicago, from 1952 until 1959. Harvey was the Madison Bureau Chief for the Associated Press and lecturer at UW Madison School of Journalism from 1959 until 1966 when he became Director of News and Publications for the UW Madison Campus. In 1969 he became the assistant to the UW President and in 1975 Harvey became the Director of Statewide Communications for the UW University System before retiring in 1990. Harvey was a founding member of the Friday Lunch Bunch which originated at the Porta Bella Restaurant and later at the Avenue Bar. The other founding members included former Gov. Tony Earl, Bill Kraus, Tom Loftus, Joel Skornica, Neil Shively, among others. Doug Moe, WSJ columnist, described the Lunch Bunch as “living by the credo: You can put it all on one check, as NEVER being uttered.”

Harvey is survived by his wife of 63 years, Charleene “Chuckie” Breuscher; son, Terry (Amy) Breuscher and their daughter, Samantha, all of Hollandale; daughter, Amy (Jim) Carter and their daughters, Hailey and Kaitlynn of Brodhead; and a sister, Dorothy Holland of Palatine, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Elroy.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014, at 11:30 a.m., at the Monroe Bible Church, 2613 8th Avenue, Monroe, WI followed by a luncheon. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Harvey’s name to the Salvation Army of Dubuque, Iowa.
