Harold Andrew Schrader
DEFOREST, Wis. — Harold Andrew Schrader, age 89, died peacefully on April 21, 2017 at Parkside Assisted Living. Harold was born July 24, 1927 to Edward and May (Henningsen) Schrader in Madison, WI. He helped farm the family farm in Token Creek until 19 years of age. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in February 1946 and on August 2, 1950 he married Ruth Bagley, two weeks prior to his being sent to Korea. He served in Korea for 20 months. After he was discharged in 1952, Ruth and he returned to Token Creek to the family farm. Together they had three children, Donnie of Fayetteville, NC; Edward (Karen) of Virginia Beach, VA; and Barbara Bullard of Fayetteville, NC. Harold had also been blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
After a few years, Harold and his family returned to Fayetteville, NC where he became a fire fighter for six years with the City. He joined the Fort Bragg Fire Department, where he served for 20 years more, retiring in 1986. In June 1984, his wife Ruth passed away. They had enjoyed spending time at their Nags Head, NC ocean cabin.
He later married his grade school friend, Marietta (Hagen) Schrader on May 9, 1987. Marietta brought new love, commitment, and joy to his life and they enjoyed 28 years together. Marietta also added a new family to Harold’s life with her five children, Dennis (Sue) Hagen, Diane Hagen Zuravle, Donna (Randy) Showers, Debra (Bill) Scholfield, and David (Betty) Hagen and many grandchildren and great‑grandchildren. They loved to garden, travel, and spend time with merged families and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Ruth, second wife Marietta, brother Robert, twin brother Donald, sister Ella Mae Meixner, sister Dorothy Peterson, and brother-in-law Darrell Redders.
Survivors include all of his children with their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his sister Marion Redders of Pardeeville, WI, his late siblings’ spouses, Imogene (Neill) Nutter, Jeanne Schrader, and Sigdor (Maxine) Peterson, along with many nieces and nephews.
We often mark the beginning and end of a person’s life with dates, born July, 24 1927 – April 21, 2017. But as anyone knows, neither Harold’s life, nor anyone else’s for that matter, can be measured by the dates. It is the “dash” between the dates, it is what happens between a person’s birth and death that is the measure of the person. It is what Harold did between those dates that is the true measure of who he is and was. His life, so full of life’s events and family, had several dashes. An obituary cannot tell the story of a person’s life, it cannot tell the story of Harold’s life. For those who knew him, who loved him, who were blessed to meet him, may we always remember to go make memories, so that when we sit back and think about them we smile for those moments, much like Harold did, between the dashes.
A visitation will be held in celebration of his life at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 6924 Lake Road, DeForest, WI 53532 on Wednesday, April 26 from 10am to 11am. A funeral service will follow at 11am at Ryan Funeral Home. To view and sign this guestbook, please visit: www.ryanfuneralservice.com.
