Harland L. Smith
WESTPORT/MONONA-Harland L. Smith, age 82, of Westport and Monona passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012 at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg. He was born on Jan. 13, 1930 in Milwaukee, the son of Lucille and Martin Welsh. Harland married Darlene Ott on Nov. 10, 1956. He graduated from Madison East High School in 1949 and soon enlisted in the Air Force where he served during the Korean Conflict. Harland worked at Cuna Supply for 42 years and retired in Sept. 1989. He served as an usher for many years at Bethel Lutheran church. Harland enjoyed Badger sports, gardening, being outdoors, spending time on his land in Pardeeville, and being with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Harland is survived by his wife, Darlene; children, Rick (Marlene) Smith of Cottage Grove, Susan (Andrew) Buchert of Fitchburg; grandchildren Nicholas and Jonathan; sister, Barbara (Robert) Burns of Spring Green; and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 312 Wisconsin Avenue, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012 with Rev. Curtis Everson presiding. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, and also at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
