Gun, vehicles, heroin seized in south Madison search
Two Madison men were arrested on multiple drug charges Monday morning, when officers seized a gun, vehicles and heroin from their south Madison home, police said.
Madison police spokesman Howard Payne said the Dane County Narcotics Task Force was investigating 26-year-old Cody A. Merkes and possible drug-related activity at his home and related to heroin overdoses over the last year.
“There had been numerous complaints of short term traffic, in and around the residence of Merkes, and that also added to him becoming a focus in this investigation,” Howard said. A police K-9 also alerted that there was the presence of drugs at Merkes’ home on the 800 block of West Badger Road.
Police searched the residence and took Merkes into custody Monday morning.
After the search, police said Merkes’ roommate, 37-year-old Shannan R. Meylor, was taken into custody on drug charges, according to the report. Police said Meylor resisted arrest, attempted to flee police and was apprehended as he was trying to discard heroin into a toilet.
Police said a county narcotics officer was injured as police while Meylor was resisting arrest. The detective was treated for a non-life-threatening hand injury.
Police seized $1,800; 20.3 grams of heroin with an approximate street value of $3,045; a loaded .380 pistol; a 2007 Chevy pickup; a 2003 Infiniti SUV, a digital scale and drug packaging.
Merkes was charged with two counts of possession with intent to deliver heroin; delivery of heroin; attempted delivery of heroin; maintaining a drug dwelling; second-degree reckless endangering safety; and six counts of bail jumping.
Meylor was charged with possession with intent to deliver heroin; maintaining a drug dwelling; resisting; a probation hold; and three counts bail jumping.
