Great Greens: The University Ridge Golf Course
University Ridge Golf Course wins best golf course
University Ridge Golf Course hit the national stage in a big way on June 24-26, 2016, when it hosted some of the world’s best at the American Family Insurance Championship. It was the first National PGA event ever held in Madison.
In addition to golfers playing in the Champions Tour event (professionals ages 50 and older), the tournament brought out celebrities, including Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre.
Sensing a great photo op, the tournament committee wanted to stage a scene on the 17th hole with Favre throwing a pass to Madison golf pro Steve Stricker. The only problem was nobody had a football.
“All we had was an old Bret Bielema signed ball that couldn’t hold air,” recalls University Ridge Head Golf Professional Ryan Wieme. “The committee told me to keep looking, so I called my brother-in-law who was on the way to the tournament, and he showed up with his James Jones (former Packers receiver) signed ball.”
With an inflated ball safely secured, Favre was able to complete the pass for the assembled media and cheering fans.
“Now my brother-in-law has a Brett Favre signed ball that also has James Jones’ signature,” Wieme jokes.
This year’s American Family Championship is scheduled for June 23-25 at University Ridge.
