Great Gifts for the Back Nine

Father’s Day is getting dangerously close, and like it or not, golf items are the typical go-to. To avoid buying Dad yet another golf hat or the practical-yet-boring golf course gift certificate, we headed to Madison golf shops to see what managers thought was the best gift to get a dad. Then we headed to Dick’s Sporting Goods to find our own picks.

General sales manager at the Westside Golf Galaxy Cory Borgen recommends TaylorMade’s RocketBallz Fairway Woods [shown at right]. The woods took gold in this year’s Golf Digest’s Hot List, and when we ask if everyone needs these particular woods, “anyone who plays golf” is Cory’s response. “People are getting amazing distance on these,” he adds. TaylorMade is making the same claim. If Dad’s game could use a little oomph, or just another reason to brag, these woods are the answer. $229.99 at Golf Galaxy.

At Nevada Bob’s, owner Joel Zucker takes a break from joking with his regulars to recommend another TaylorMade club, this one the R11S Driver [shown at left]. With a tagline of “Bigger. Faster. Longer. More Tunable.” the driver is uniquely customizable, allowing Dad to adjust the loft, the face and the center of gravity. While Dad may not send the ball 310 yards like TaylorMade-sponsored golfer Sergio Garcia, he’ll certainly impress his caddy with his club. $399 at Nevada Bob’s.

If you’re feeling extra generous, head to Dick’s Sporting Goods to add the TaylorMade RBZ Stand Bag  or R11 Pure-Lite Stand Bag [shown at right] to give the new clubs a new home. $170 and $200 at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Or eschew the golf equipment altogether and give Dad a kiss, a box of his favorite golf balls and permission to spend the day on the course. Chances are he’ll be happy either way.
