Grass fire causes multiple crashes in Monroe Co.
TOMAH, Wis. — The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department says one person is dead after a three vehicle crash about 9:00 a.m. Friday in Monroe County.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says State Highway 173 is closed from State Highway 21 to State Highway 80, northeast of Tomah.
A grass fire nearby sent thick smoke over Hwy 173, reducing visibility to 20 feet in some areas.
One vehicle stopped on the highway because of the smoke. A second vehicle ran into the back of the stopped vehicle due to the reduced visibility.
Two women in the second vehicle exited their vehicle after the crash. While exiting their vehicle, a third vehicle ran into the back of their vehicle, also striking the two women.
One of the women from the second vehicle was killed at the scene.
Two others were injured in the crashes. One person was taken to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The other was treated at the scene with minor injuries.
Northbound traffic is being detoured on Hwy 21 eastbound to Hwy 80, then northbound to Hwy 173. Southbound traffic is being detoured in the opposite direction.
Cranfest in Warrens started today and is located 8 miles northwest of the grass fire and crashes.
