Grace Coffee Co. has shut down their location at 417 State Street.

Grace Coffee Co. abruptly closed its State Street location, according to a sign posted on the shop’s front door.

Grace Coffee Co. still has five other locations throughout Dane County, most recently opening a Verona location at 150 W. End Circle in summer 2021. The sign on the now-closed State Street shop encourages customers to visit the two closest stores at 1004 S. Park St. and 1216 E. Washington Ave. The other locations are at 1261 Cabela Drive, Sun Prairie, and 1824 Parmenter St., Middleton.

The State Street spot was the local chain’s first location that opened in 2019. It made headlines back then after facing community backlash and not getting proper permission from the Urban Design Commission for painting the 135-year-old brick and stone building black. The pandemic didn’t keep owners Nikki Bloomer and Carlos Falcon from expanding the business. Grace opened five additional locations in the Madison area within three years.

This is the first Grace Coffee Co. location to announce a closure. Last October, the coffee shop received multiple health code violations across several of its locations. The State Street location received 20 violations, but as of mid-November, there was no re-inspection required. In response to the health code violations, co-owners Nikki Bloomer and Carlos Falcon admitted in a News 3 Now report that “rapid growth can come with growing pains.

Falcon has not responded to a request for comment regarding the State Street closure.
