Governor orders policy changes to combat aid fraud
Gov. Walker makes policy changes to combat abuse of public aid
MADISON, Wis. — Gov. Scott Walker has ordered some policy changes to combat the abuse of public aid programs.
One of the changes requires people who are self-employed and receiving assistance to submit tax returns. Walker also set up a fraud prevention task force.
The policy changes follow recent Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1bv6myY ) investigations which showed how regulators failed to verify actual income for self-employed applicants or those who make no money. The newspaper uncovered cases where aid recipients have a number of rental properties, but don’t disclose the income.
Fraud investigators welcomed the policy changes, but say additional access to bank information, credit reports and other data is needed to fight abuse of aid programs.
