Gordon D. “Pickle” Clayton, 80, of Belmont, Wisconsin, died on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Manor Care Health Services, Platteville.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Rev. Monte Robinson will officiate. Burial will be at the Belmont Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Hinkins-Moody American Legion Post #453. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2014 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, or from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday.

Gordon was born on November 3, 1933 in Belmont, Wisconsin, to Cecil Sr. and Cora (Waggett) Clayton. He attended Strawberry grade school and graduated from Belmont High School in 1952. After graduation he attended and graduated from the Reisch School of Auctioneering, Mason City, Iowa. He sold many auctions over the past 50 years.

He was united in marriage to Pauline B. Gleichauf on July 24, 1954 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Mineral Point, WI. Gordon served in the United States Navy from 1955-1957. He and Pauline farmed south of Belmont for 32 years. In 1964, he went into a partnership with his brothers Cecil Jr. and Donald Sr. to take ownership of the Belmont Livestock Market. Then later on, they formed the Clayton Real-estate and Auction Service. Gordon was very active in his community, a member of the Belmont Lions Club for 50 years, and Hinkins-Moody American Legion Post #453. He also served many years on the Belmont fair parade committee, as well as, sold the Livestock Auctions.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Pauline of 59 years; five children, Gail (Denny) Martin of Iowa Falls, IA; Richard (Debra) Clayton of Bonduel, WI; Jill (Mike) Ludwig of Burlington, WI; John (Mary Lou) Clayton of Burlington, WI; Sue (Rick) Schmidt of Elkhorn, WI; 12 grandchildren, Michelle (Greg) Shaefer; Blake (Nikki) Martin; Jimmy Clayton; Brittany (Ray) Ort; Joshua Ludwig; Jason (Amber) Ludwig; Jesse Lee; Bianca Clayton; Gavin Clayton; Seth Schmidt; Ethan Schmidt; David Norman; two great-grandchildren, Maliyah and Mack Schaefer; two step-great-grandchildren, Emily and Brody Siems; three brothers, Cecil Jr. Clayton; Donald Sr. (Jackie) Clayton; Roger Clayton; two sisters, Joyce (Hubert) Mester; Gola Finkelmeyer; two sisters-in-law, Betty Gleichauf and Fern Gleischauf; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; four nieces; and three nephews.
