Donations to the Wisconsin Humane Society are being matched for Giving Tuesday to help dogs like Hercules, a dog currently at WHS’s Racine Campus after nearly starving to death.

Hercules was skin and bones when he was brought to the humane society after living on the streets of Racine for months, according to a release. The 2-year-old dog would always run off when police tried to coax him, but he would eat scraps tossed to him by neighbors, and then sneak away to hide.

Hercules showed up on someone’s front porch in mid-November, and WHS staff members went to help rescue him, according to the release. Hercules was extremely thin, cold and he didn’t know whom to trust, so he backed himself into a shed where rescuers were able to get a leash on him.

“With patience, gentle coaxing, and some treats, Hercules began to let his guard down. By the time they got back to the shelter, Hercules was walking alongside staff on his own, quietly assessing his new surroundings,” officials said in the release.

Hercules’ body condition score was one on a scale of nine, officials said. He was truly emaciated and there was less than 5 percent body fat on his 56 pound frame. His muscles had begun to atrophy.

Nearly two weeks later, Hercules has been steadily gaining weight and is quickly coming out of his shell, officials said. He still has a long way to go before he’s healthy enough for a home of his own.

In honor of Giving Tuesday, all donations made Tuesday to WHS will be automatically matched up to $10,000, thanks to WHS friend Jude Ford, according to the release. Donations can be made online or by calling Christine at 414-431-6119.
