Gilbert “Gil” Sedor, age 80, of Janesville, died on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at Mercy Hospital & Trauma Center. He was born in Wausau on June 27, 1933, the son of Walter and Florence (Kasper) Sedor. Gil served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1954. He attended Marquette University on a full scholarship to play football and wrestle. He was busy with two sports and law school, preparing him to balance his law career and volunteer work in Janesville. He graduated from Marquette Law School and was admitted to the bar on Feb. 10, 1961.
He moved to Janesville in February of 1961, where his accomplishments in his law career were many. He retired from law in 2003. Gil joined or helped almost every nonprofit in Janesville, and was active with young attorneys, bar associations and teaching law at UW-Madison. He was instrumental in building the Hedberg Public Library and Rotary Gardens. He was a volunteer for the Hedberg Public Library, Rotary Gardens, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, YMCA, UW-Rock County, Agrace HospiceCare, Inc., law organizations, adoption groups, women’s charities, Marquette University, Janesville Performing Arts Center, and the Rock County Historical Society. Gil’s specialty was fundraising, he was not afraid to ask people for money.
He volunteered for local Catholic churches and bought Christmas presents for the poor. He won the United Way of North Rock County Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award, the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, and the YMCA Volunteer of the Year Award. He is also in the Rock County Hall of Honor.
He is survived by his 2 children, Daniel Sedor of Janesville and Rachel (Kenneth Mahadeo) Sedor of New York; 2 sisters, Irene Cascio of Milwaukee and Lorraine Golla of Stevens Point; and a brother, Irv (Bev) Kasper of Wausau. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Ryan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at ST. MARY’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 307 E. Wall, Janesville with Rev. Stephen J. Umhoefer officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY. Lasting Memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare, Inc. or Mercy Hospice.
