Gen was born on December 15, 1918 on the home farm in Platteville Township, the daughter of E. Cronin and Mary Ann “Mae” (Prytherch) Kies. She was united in marriage to Ernest “Doc” Culver on November 5, 1940 at Whig United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on April 5, 2005. Gen attended the Stumptown School and graduated from Platteville High School in 1936. She furthered her education and graduated from Bayliss Business College in Dubuque, Iowa and from the Platteville State Teachers College. After she and Doc were married, World War II began and Doc was stationed in California. While in California, Gen worked in an airplane factory as a bicycle courier. After a few years, Doc was re-stationed to Wichita, Kansas. During their time there, Gen worked as a secretary. Once Doc was discharged from the service, he and Gen moved back to the home farm in Lima Township, Wisconsin. Gen also did secretarial work for Doc for 33 years while he was the Lima Township Clerk.

Gen was a lifelong member, and very active member, of the Whig United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, sang many duets for weddings, funerals, and various church events, and she was also the UMW (United Methodist Women) president for a number of years. Gen enjoyed sewing, she was an excellent seamstress, and baking; where she even hosted Thanksgiving for the entire family, around 40 people, for many years. But Gen enjoyed the most, taking care of her children.

She is survived by two children, Rev. Carson (Marilyn (Irish)) Culver of Richland Center, WI; Susan Culver of Platteville; four grandchildren, Joseph Oates, Jayne (Scott) McPhail, Sean (Myranda) Culver, and Benjamin (Tanya) Culver; eight great-grandchildren; sons-in-law, Wayne Schambow and Gary Oates; sister-in-law, Anna Beth Culver; and various nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Mary Schambow; sister, Ruth (Meyer) Taylor; brother-in-law, Jerry Culver; sisters-in-law, Hila (Robert) Heffernan and Augusta (Byron) Stephens; and special friends, Ken and Gen Olson.
