Gardner leads Marquette past LSU
Golden Eagles get 15th straight home victory
Marquette 84, Louisiana State 80: Junior Cadougan scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half as the host Golden Eagles rebounded after squandering a 22-point lead to record their 15th straight victory at BMO Harris Bradley Center.
Davante Gardner came off the bench to make all nine of his free throw attempts and finish with a team-high 19 points. Gardner also had five steals and Vander Blue added 17 points for Marquette (8-3), which has won five of its last six.
Andre Stringer made six 3-pointers en route to a game-high 20 points for Louisiana State (7-2), which has dropped two of its last three.
The Tigers erased a 44-22 deficit after going on a 27-5 surge that spanned from the first half into the second. Stringer drilled consecutive 3-pointers as Louisiana State seized a 58-57 edge.
The advantage was short-lived as Blue and Jamil Wilson made 3-pointers and Cadougan drilled another as the Golden Eagles seized a 69-62 lead. The Tigers trimmed the deficit to a basket with 37 seconds left, but Charles Carmouche lost control of the ball and Gardner made four free throws to ice the contest.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Trent Lockett and Blue got the Golden Eagles off to a solid start by keying a 17-3 run to open the contest. Lockett had seven points – including a 3-pointer to finish the run – while Blue made three layups. … While Stringer went 6-for-10 from 3-point range, the remainder of the Tigers went just 4-for-16 from beyond the arc.
