MADISON, Wis. — Officials are investigating the cause of a fire that totaled a Madison garage and damaged nearby buildings late Saturday night.

A crew was sent to the area of East Dayton and Fifth streets for reports of a possible burning complaint shortly before 11 p.m. Dispatchers received multiple calls of a garage fire in the area as firefighters were headed to the scene.

The department requested help from additional crews for a full structure fire response.

According to an incident report, the garage was completely engulfed when the crew arrived, and the “radiant” heat had already affected nearby buildings.

Firefighters started to flow water back and forth to attack the garage fire as well as wet down the nearby home that was exposed. Other crews arrived to help extinguish the fire and put out smoldering hot spots.

The garage is considered a total loss. The fire did not spread to the inside of the nearby home, though the exterior of the building sustained damage.

The report said the family was not displaced and no one was hurt.
