Funding for tribal cultural center may be revoked

Property taxes to increase more than projected

Revoking a $250,000 grant to help the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa build a cultural center is up for a vote.

The state Building Commission plans to take up the issue at its meeting Wednesday. Taking back the money is being proposed by the commission’s vice chairman, Republican Rep. Dean Kaufert. He called for reconsidering the grants after the tribe and other Chippewa bands dramatically increased their spring walleye spearfishing goals.

That move is prompting the state to impose a one-fish limit for other anglers on nearly 200 northern Wisconsin lakes to protect the fishery.

Kaufert said if progress is being made with Gov. Scott Walker’s office to find a compromise, he will delay voting on the cultural center funding until May.
