She graduated from Darlington High School in 1936 and later from Platteville State Teachers College, where she received her degree in teaching. She taught elementary grades in Janesville and Platteville schools. For several years, she worked in the office of Janesville Citizens Loan and Investment Co. and for 21 years prior to her retirement, was employed by the Allstate Insurance Company in its claims department.
Frieda was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Evangelical and Reformed Church in Darlington and was privileged to attend the celebration of the congregation’s 100th anniversary in 2009. She was very proud of her Swiss heritage and enjoyed her two trips to Switzerland to meet family members and tour the beautiful country of her parents’ birth.
On October 23, 1965, Frieda married Ward E. Baxter at First Lutheran Church in Janesville. They resided in Madison until 1969, at which time they moved into their home in rural Cottage Grove. After her retirement, she farmed with her husband until they retired in 1976. After Ward’s death in 1997, she remained in their home until 2003. She then moved to Taylor Ridge independent living apartments for seniors in Cottage Grove and in Dec. 2013, moved to Aster Retirement Community.
Frieda was an active member of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church of Cottage Grove, where she served as an elder and deacon and sang in the choir, the Stoughton Area Retired Educators’ Association, the Cottage Grove Area Historical Society and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed walking, reading, gardening, attending a weekly Bible Study class, caring for feline pets, traveling, especially to auto tours with Ward, and spending time with friends.
