Freight railroad running through Rock and Walworth counties to receive improvement grant
MADISON, Wis — The Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced that a freight railroad running through Rock and Walworth counties will be one of eight projects receiving an improvement grant.
The grant will fund the replacement of 15.2 miles of rail from Milton to Whitewater with continuous welded rail as a part of eight projects receiving $16 million in the DOT’s Freight Railroad Preservation Program grants and Freight Railroad Infrastructure Improvement loans.
This segment of rail is one of six Wisconsin Southern Railroad projects receiving funds. The regional railroad is receiving $11,563,232 in grants and $1,445,404 in loans. They will provide $1,445,404 in matching funds.
According to the DOT, the grant and loan programs are meant to help increase the use of rail transportation.
