Freedom Inc. calls for Dane Co. DA Ozanne to resign

MADISON, Wis. — Community group Freedom Inc. is calling for Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne to resign after one of the group’s leaders was arrested while advocating for a woman who was sentenced last week following a fatal 2018 shooting in a city parking garage.

Jessica Williams was arrested as she entered the Dane County Courthouse last Friday to attend a sentencing hearing for Kenyairra Gadson. Gadson was sentenced to 13 years in prison after being convicted of reckless homicide in connection with the October 2018 shooting.

Freedom Inc. held a virtual news conference Wednesday morning calling for Ozanne to step down.

“The DA and his accomplices are still on their little power trip,” Freedom Inc.’s Bianca Gomez said. “They’re still trying to punish Jessica and punish our movement for standing up against state violence, for standing up against patriarchy and capitalism and white supremacy.”

Ozanne, she said, “continues to use manipulative tactics to control our narrative, to control our movement, to disorganize and disorient us and they are really underestimating our strength and our strategy right now.”

Mahnker Dahnweih from Freedom Inc. accused Ozanne of “targeting Black survivors for years.”

“We need to put an end to it,” Dahnweih said.

In an email to News 3 Now Wednesday afternoon, Ozanne did not directly respond to calls for his resignation but said, “The matter you are inquiring about is not being handled by the Dane County District Attorney’s Office.”
