Frederick E. Knowles
Frederick E. Knowles, Sr., of Lancaster, Wisconsin, died unexpectedly on Christmas morning, December 25, 2014.
He was born on April 22, 1930 in Aurora, Illinois, the son of George Elmer Knowles, Jr. and Mabel Elizabeth (Marshall) Knowles. On June 12, 1954 he married Della Mae Hawkinson in Aurora, IL. They celebrated 60 years of marriage last June.
Fred grew up in Aurora and LaGrange, Illinois. He attended West Aurora High School. Extremely proud of his military service in the U.S.Army Signal Corps, he was awarded five bronze stars. He achieved the rank of corporal and served in General McArthur’s headquarters in Tokyo, the Korean War, and Okinawa. His unit was among the first sent to Korea to establish communications before other troops were sent over. Fred was a member of American Legion Post #489, Yorkville, Illinois.
He was employed for nearly 50 years as an auto mechanic. At home, he enjoyed photography, wood working, old movies and long vacation drives to look up army buddies, old friends and relatives. He delighted in feeding the squirrels and birds at his many feeders.
Fred is survived by his wife, Della, at Orchard Manor, Lancaster, WI; daughters, Nanette Hitchins of Platteville, WI; Lynette Knowles of Carbondale, IL; Donna Mae (Gerry) Schroeder of Bloomington, IL; son, Frederick E. (Debbie) Knowles, Jr. of Pearland, TX; grandchildren, Emily Yoshino of Prairie du Chien, WI; Jim (Cheryl) Hitchins of Madison, WI; Elise Schroeder of Bloomington, IL; Patrick Schroeder of Bloomington, IL; Ben Knowles of Aurora, IL; great-grandchildren, Krystal, Ashley and Rebecca Yoshino of Prairie du Chien, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, sister and son-in-law, David Hitchins.
Funeral services will be at 6:00 p.m. Monday, December 29, 2014 at the Melby Funeral Home and Crematory, 1245 N. Water St., Platteville, WI. Rev. Jeffrey Pedersen will officiate.
Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Monday. Interment with military rites will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at River Hills Memorial Park Cemetery, 1650 South River St., Batavia, IL. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
