Frederick “Fred” A. Berg, age 71, of Janesville, died on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at Agrace HospiceCare, Inc., Fitchburg. He was born in Whitehall on Oct. 18, 1942, the son of Alton and Charlotte (Dambach) Berg. He graduated from Whitehall High School, and served for 4 years in the U.S. Navy including doing a tour aboard the USS Wasp during the Cuban Boycott Cruise. He also served two more years in the reserves.
Fred retired in October of 2001 from General Motors after 35 years, and was a member of the UAW Local 95. He loved to travel and attended his Wasp reunions every year. Fred enjoyed listening to his large collection of vinyl records especially the classic country artists. In addition, he enjoyed time spent with family and driving his Cadillac to the Milton Ave. Subway restaurant.
Fred is survived by his daughter, Lauri (Michael) Knapton of Janesville; granddaughter, Kaitlyn; brother, Steven (Cindi) Berg of Spring, TX; sister, Rebecca Taylor of Phoenix, AZ; nephew, Aaron (Natosha) Berg and their son, Carson; niece, Ashley (Nick) Bench; and 3 aunts: Brenda (Kelly), Adeline, and Lovey. He was preceded in death by his parents and former wife, Judy Berg.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH with Rev. James Melvin and Rev. Theron Benedict officiating. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church.
Lasting Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church or Agrace HospiceCare, Inc. SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY is assisting the family.
