Francis “Mike” J. Gmeinder
Madison – Francis J. “Mike” Gmeinder, age 99, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 27, 2014 at St. Mary’s Care Center.
Mike was born on April 16, 1915, in Sun Prairie, the son of Robert and Isabelle (Berger) Gmeinder. Mike’s childhood was spent in and around the Sun Prairie, Verona and Oregon communities; as a young adult he settled in Madison. Mike was united in marriage to Ramona M. Fahey on April 16, 1940. Ramona preceded him in death on June 12, 1953.
Mike remarried on August 8, 1959 to Frances Catherine Ganser. Mike and Frances enjoyed 48 years of marriage; Frances preceded him in death on August 31, 2007. Mike was a loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather, brother and uncle. In addition to the dedication he demonstrated toward his family, Mike will be remembered as a man who valued the importance of friends, hard work and faith. Mike owned and operated Gmeinder Home Service for many years. After retirement, he remained active through volunteer work with St. James Church and School, Meals on Wheels, Apostolate to the Handicapped and Blessed Martin House. He was a devoted member of St. James Catholic Church throughout his adult life, as well as, an active member of Knights of Columbus Council 531 and the Madison Elks 410.
Mike is survived by his daughter, Sister Joan Gmeinder, S.S.N.D. of Elm Grove; four sons, Rich (Pat) of Madison, Frank (Jean) of Monticello, Tom (Jill) of Madison and Ken (Susan) of Madison; 14 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren plus many nieces and nephews. In addition to Ramona and Frances, Mike was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Cyrilla Schuch and Rita Geier and brothers, Gregory Gmeinder, Robert Gmeinder and Carl Bryant.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at GOOD SHEPHERD CATHOLIC PARISH – St. JAMES CHURCH, 1128 St. James Court, Madison on Friday, December 5, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Monsignors Thomas Baxter officiating and Douglas Dushack co- officiating. A visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass. Graveside services will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Oregon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. James School or a charity of your choice in Mike’s name. The family would like to extend our sincere appreciation and a special thank you to the staff at St. Mary’s Care Center Memory Care Unit for the excellent care and support given to Mike.
Dad always said he was “the luckiest Mike Gmeinder in the world”. We were the ones who were lucky to have you in our lives Dad. Love – your family.
