Florida man sentenced to 52 months for credit card fraud scheme
MADISON, Wis. — The Department of Justice announced Thursday that a Florida man was sentenced to 52 months in federal prison for a 2016 credit card fraud scheme, according to a news release.
Chief U.S. District Judge James Peterson who presided over the case sentenced 31-year-old Janoy Garcia-Prieto of Miami after Garcia-Prieto plead guilty to conspiring to commit access device fraud and possession of 15 or more counterfeit access devices, the release said.
According to the release, Garcia-Prieto, Pedro Lorenzo-Concepcion and Jorge Consuegra-Rojas attempted using a counterfeit credit card at a grocery store in Mauston, Wisconsin. Shortly after leaving the store, the group’s vehicle, which had been rented in New Orleans, was pulled over by law enforcement after leaving the store. Police searched the vehicle and found false identification documents, counterfeit credit cards, multiple cellphones, two computers, three flash drives, six credit card skimmers, a credit card reader/writer, and 280 gift cards valued at over $23,000.
When law enforcement officials searched the flash drives and computers, they found 1,679 stolen credit card numbers. During the investigation, officials also discovered the group had made dozens of fraudulent purchases at stores throughout Minnesota, totaling more than $20,000.
In the sentencing hearing, Judge Peterson noted that Garcia-Prieto played a critical role in the scheme, the release said. According to the release, Judge Peterson also noted that Garcia-Prieto avoided arrest for over eight months after his indictment and had a prior federal conviction in 2011.
According to the release, Judge Peterson sentenced Consuegra-Rojas to 60 months and Lorenzo-Concepcion to 46 months for their respective roles in the conspiracy.
