‘Fittest on Earth’ title claimed as 2021 CrossFit games close

MADISON, Wis. — After five grueling days of competitions that ranged from weightlifting to gymnastics two people have been crowned ‘Fittest on Earth’ at the 2021 CrossFit games.

Tia-Clair Toomey competing in the women’s division shares the title with men’s division winner Justin Medeiros.

“I think it really inspires me because I love CrossFit,” said event spectator Anna Dean. “I like to see all these women being strong and lifting a bunch of weight.

Chris Dean brought his daughter Anna to the games because he said it’s important for kids to see how far fitness can take you in life.

“For them to come here to see the most elite athletes in the world doing things you couldn’t imagine people doing, it’s pretty neat,” he said.

Thousands of people visiting Madison for the games will make their way home tonight, including more than 600 athletes from all over the world.

This includes Canadian CrossFit athlete Samuel Cournoyer who said, despite being competitors, it’s the support people give each other that makes the CrossFit community so special.

“It’s probably the sport who you will meet the greatest people on the earth and you make a lot of friends in CrossFit so it’s pretty cool,” he added.

Cournoyer ranked 12th worldwide in last year’s game but was cut from 2021 games on Saturday after being sick.

“Honestly I just tried to survive,” he said. “My goal was just to try to make that final cut at the end but my body wasn’t responding so it’s kind of hard to compete when your body doesn’t want to compete.”

Though this weekend wasn’t what he hoped for Cournoyer said he’s feeling better now and will be coming back next year.

“It’s part of who I am. I’m an athlete,” he said. “I’m born to compete.”

Some fans no only want to keep coming back to the games, but also want to to keep coming back to Madison.

“Just the vibe of walking up in the morning looking out the window there are people running, biking, rowing, It’s a neat–neat fitness type vibe,” Chris Dean said.

The CrossFit games have been in Madison since 2017 and are schedule to be back next year at the Alliant Energy Center.

The 2023 games don’t have a home just yet but CrossFit is accepting bids for a new host city.
