Fitchburg police to investigate inmate death

The Fitchburg Police Department is investigating the circumstances of the death of an 87-year-old male inmate from Madison.

The inmate had been serving a six-month sentence for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, fifth offense. The inmate was being housed at the Dane County Jail Ferris Center Huber work release facility at 2120 Rimrock Road, according to a release from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.

The inmate was evaluated by a jail nurse Saturday at 2:10 p.m. After the evaluation, he was taken to Unity Point Health-Meriter Hospital, where he was admitted, officials said.

The inmate was pronounced dead at the hospital Monday. An autopsy was completed by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office on Tuesday. The death does not appear to be suspicious and the primary investigation continues by the Fitchburg Police Department, Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, officials said.
