Fitchburg experiences increase in car thefts
FITCHBURG, Wis. — Reports of stolen cars and the number of cars listed as stolen have increased in Fitchburg, according to the Fitchburg Police Department.
A majority of the reports involve car owners who have left their car unlocked and running or left a key in their unlocked car, officials say. Police say automobile thefts are one of the most preventable crimes and urge the public to take steps to make sure their cars are secure.
Some of those steps include never leaving a car running to warm it up or even for a brief time to run back inside; ensuring no spare keys are left inside; double checking the car is locked; parking in a secure area and not leaving valuable items in the car.
