First responders face off in ‘Battle of the Badges’
MADISON, Wis. — First responders from Madison’s police and fire departments faced off Saturday night in an icy showdown for a good cause.
The third annual “Battle of the Badges” pitted the agencies against each other in a game of hockey as a fundraiser for the Safe Communities Coalition, which works to fight opioid addiction.
Participants said the game was just another way of connecting with the community.
“All police and fire (personnel) do our jobs because we like giving back to the community, and we feel a dedication to civil service,” Matt Murray, with the Fire Department, said. “So to do this and have people come out and support us and give us money, it hits home.”
The Fire Department won the game, 7-2, and the event raised thousands of dollars for the coalition.
