Fire pit causes house fire in Janesville; Cat dies

A Janesville home was damaged and a cat died in a fire investigators said was caused by a fire pit near the home, officials said.

The Janesville Fire Department was dispatched to reports of a possible residential fire with flames and smoke showing at 3773 Ridge Drive around 2:10 a.m. Sunday, according to a release.

When crews arrived, they could see flames and smoke, and initiated an exterior attack on the flames, officials said. All occupants were reported out of the residence, but crews were notified of two animals, a cat and dog, that could still be in the residence.

An initial investigation revealed the cause of the fire was a fire pit adjacent to a deck extending to the home, according to the release. There were no reported injuries, and the dog was found alive. The cat died in the fire.

Two vehicles in the garage and shed close to the home suffered damage, officials said.

An estimate of damages has not been released.
