Fire causes $15K in damage to east side business, officials say
MADISON, Wis. — The cause of a fire that damaged an east side business Wednesday night is still under investigation, officials said.
Crews were called around 7:45 p.m. to the 4700 block of Helgesen Drive for reports of a fire along the outside wall, according to a release.
A witness told firefighters he thought he smelled something burning and later saw flames along the exterior wall of the building at 4709 Helgesen Drive, officials said. He also found a garbage can on fire, which he pulled away from the building and doused with buckets of water.
Crews found smoke coming from one side of the multiunit commercial structure when they arrived, according to the release. They put out the fire, but found more active flames inside the wall after peeling away the metal siding.
Firefighters found smoke in the building, but no active fire, according to the release.
Damage is estimated at around $15,000, officials said.
