Fire at Wilderness Resort dormitory causes $5 million in damage, officials say
WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. — A fire at an employee dormitory Thursday morning near the Wilderness Lodge in Wisconsin Dells caused more than $5 million in damage, officials said.
Wilderness security noticed smoke at the construction site of the Wilderness Resort J-1 dormitory around 3:55 a.m., officials said via a Facebook post.
Crews were called to the scene around 4:10 a.m., Sauk County officials said.
According to a Facebook post from the Delton Fire Department, the three-story new construction building was fully involved with flames when crews arrived.
A nearby dormitory that was threatened by fire was immediately evacuated, officials said. Fire crews worked to protect neighboring structures, but two of them were damaged.
A large construction crane on scene was also affected by the fire, causing it to partially collapse, according to the post.
The fire was under control around 5 a.m., but crews remained on scene most of the morning monitoring hot spots, officials said.
No one was injured in the fire, and no employees or guests were affected by the fire, resort officials said.
“The resort is cooperating with Lake Delton Fire Department as they investigate the cause of the fire,” the Facebook post said.
The resort is operating as usual, officials said.
Delton Fire officials said the building is a total loss with damage estimated at more than $5 million. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The dorm was expected to be completed in June.
Crews from 10 fire departments, three law enforcement agencies, four EMS departments, three public works departments and the Salvation Army responded to the scene.
